The Japanese Folding Hand Fan, known as Sensu, is believed to have originated in Nagoya during the 18th century. Unlike its counterparts from Kyoto, the Nagoya-based Sensu had a specific number of ribs to suit the formal and conservative style preferred by the Nagoyan wearers. These fans gained popularity during the Taisho era (1912-1926).
