That's a very big and heavy kokeshi by artist Masae Fujikawa. It has beautiful white-red plum flowers painted on her 'Michiyuki' (a traditional coat to wear over a kimono when going out on the street). Plum is a early Spring flower in Japan. 

'Doushin' means child's (pure) heart in Japanese. This might remind you of your childhood memory.
