Rare vintage Ittobori Daruma Doll. Wood carved in the same block with the same knife.
This yawning Daruma opens his mouth very wide, recalls Daruma Daishi sitting in front of the wall (menpeki kunen 面壁 九年) in the Suuzan temple (崇山) in China.
Yawning loudly (akubi 欠 伸) is not socially correct behavior, but taking a deep breath brings oxygen to your brain and helps your mind to be sharp. No wonder then that Daruma during his long periods of meditation took a good yawn every now and then. And just that moment is captured in some of these humorous statues.
This daruma shows little teeth! Look at the pictures carefully to spot them.
This sculpture will hold a significant place in your decoration whether at home or at your office.
